Overview
St. Andrew’s School is a premier college preparatory school located in Middletown, Delaware. The all-boarding, private, co-educational high school (grades 9-12) serves more than 300 students. Founded in 1929 by Felix DuPont, it is dedicated to academic excellence. Amos Hall, built in 1967, was its first dedicated science and math facility and was, at the time, state-of-the-art.
The technological advances since 1967 are staggering and the school knew they needed to make extensive improvements to Amos Hall to set the stage for cutting edge science and math education for years to come.
St. Andrew’s undertook a complete $9.5M renovation of Amos Hall. Although the interior of the building was completely gutted, the existing exterior footprint was maintained. As part of Zimmerman Studios team Entech provided all MEP design.
Solution Details
We provided design development, construction documents, bidding and construction administration services for the $9.5M total rehabilitation. In addition, we were asked to correct humidity issues in the Archives Room and connect the renovated building to the campus fire protection loop. We also assisted with meeting requirements for the building to become LEED Certified. LEED components include cool roof shingles, water efficient fixtures and high performance glass. Seventy-five percent (75%) of demolition waste was diverted from landfills. Entech provided credit information for water efficiency credits and indoor environmental quality controls.
While maintaining the existing footprint, the new STEM building has double the space for biology, physics, and chemistry labs with dedicated space for a computer science classroom, a robotics lab, a 3-D printing lab, collaborative project rooms, and an outdoor classroom. Most of the East exterior wall and the majority of the interior walls were removed and replaced with high performance glass. The LEED Certified building is now flooded with natural light and expansive views of St. Andrew’s other “science classroom” – the Noxontown Pond and its surrounding 2200-acre campus.
The new facility invites all students into the learning experience, encouraging curiosity and interaction and provides an open, transparent learning environment for inspiring new generations of scientists.
What They Said
"As I look around the new shared math and science faculty offices, I see spaces that invite students to volunteer their thoughts, ideas, questions about their work at St. Andrew’s, and their future aspirations."
-Dean of Math & Science
