Overview
A Natural Gas transmission compressor station was experiencing significant pipe vibration and pulsation at several locations causing structural and weld issues with fatigue and failure in some cases.
The client provided our Oil & Gas Facility Engineering group with a detailed vibration and pulsation analysis, including general recommendations for areas of additional support. The compressor project included the design of supports for piping associated with (2) single stage Clark TCVD-16 Reciprocating Compressors (Units #1 & #2) and (2) Clark TCVD-16 Reciprocating Compressors (Units #3 & #4).
We collaborated with the client to provide detailed piping support design for the following areas:
- Removal and demolition plans for the existing recycle (bypass) line supports, on both left and right compressor banks, for Units #1 & #2.
- New recycle (bypass) line supports for Units #1 & #2 to increase stiffness in the primary axis of vibration.
- Additional bracing for the Unit #2 right bank vent (blowdown) piping to increase stiffness in the axial (crankshaft) direction.
- Additional bracing for the suction and discharge isolation valve operators on Units #1, #2, #3, and #4 were added to increase stiffness and reduce vibrations.

Our O&G Facility Engineering group reviewed the pulsation and vibration report that was provided at the kickoff of the project and developed a preliminary project execution plan. An engineering field review was then conducted to document field measurements and photograph the areas in question. Utilizing the provided report and the field as-built information/photos we developed detailed fabrication drawings for each support.
The detailed fabrication drawings and associated contractor installation notes were provided as revision details on the existing station drawings to reduce future drawing modifications and maintain current documentation. The client’s coating and material specifications were utilized to maintain consistency throughout their system installations. Neoprene pads were utilized to protect the piping in areas of pipe clamps and reduce damage to the applied coatings.
We also provided demolition notes in areas where existing pipe supports would be removed. A contractor scope of work, detailing the required demolition, fabrication, and installation of this station’s pipe support modifications was also provided.
