Dedicated Natural Gas Utility Pipeline

UGI Utilities, Inc. Middletown, PA

Projects

Overview

A local natural gas distribution company approached Entech for the full design of a dedicated pipeline feeding a United Parcel Service (UPS) Distribution facility located in south central Pennsylvania. This 13,500’ long 8-inch high-pressure pipeline provides fuel for the facility utilities as well as an onsite compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station for the company’s delivery truck fleet.

The chosen alignment required multiple roadway, railroad, waterbody, geotechnical, and utility crossings as well as a variety of permitting needs.

Solution Details
highlights
  • Coordinated with Rail Lines to Acquire Crossing Permissions
  • 4 HDDs Totaling Approximately 2,400’ in Length
  • 250’ of Cased Pipeline Crossings
  • 13,500’ of High Pressure 8” Natural Gas Pipeline feeding a CNG refueling station and end-user
  • Detailed Tie-in Design and Hot-tap Layout
  • 8 - Rock Construction and Access Road Exhibits

The established right-of-way (ROW) for this dedicated line was wrought with challenges. Upon 30% review, we determined nearly thirty (30) significant obstacles requiring specific design review and considerations. Not the least of which were two (2) rail lines, a limited access highway, sinkholes, and multiple stream crossings. An existing high-tension power line created multiple concerns including land negotiations, AC mitigation design, and utility crossing coordination. Although challenging, clear communication and collaboration between all project entities prevailed.

We provided a full construction set of pipeline alignment sheets that included pipeline construction limit of disturbance (LOD), ROW, and construction access throughout. A desktop pipeline class study and high consequence area (HCA) evaluation was conducted and then field verified. We provided pipeline sizing and material selections according to the design MAOP and associated class study. Along with these material selections and stress evaluations, We provided a pipeline bend list and upstream hot-tap tie-in details. A corridor survey and construction staking were also provided.

We provided detailed exhibits of four (4) different HDD crossings. These crossings included an HDDs for two rail lines, one state roadway, and approximately 1,500’ of HDD to cross a significant geological formation and stream. Access road exhibits, grading, and rock construction details were provided for eight (8) different locations to accommodate pipeline ROW preparation and construction.
