We had so much fun last year with our Tournament of Talks at the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association’s Annual Conference (PRWA, we're doing it again!
Along with all the basketball madness happening in March, our four (4) speakers at the 2019 PRWA conference have a tournament of their own – going head-to-head with one another, putting their talks to the test - competing for audience members!
They’ve gathered their monikers and mascots and have their game faces on, ready to take the stage to inform and dazzle audiences. If you’re at PRWA this year, support your favorite(s) by attending their presentation (foam fingers are optional).
See below for the speaker and topic line-ups, and fear not; there are no losers or bracket busters in this tournament. The real winners are the folks learning about these pertinent water and wastewater topics covered by our team. If you’re looking for more: see the full conference schedule.
And feel free to stop by our booth (#40) anytime during the conference. Our players will be rotating through, eager to hear about any lingering challenges you’re facing, or just to meet new industry friends sign autographs, or pose for photos with fans - ok, maybe not those last two, but we can dream, right?!?

Maintaining Water Quality through the Budgetary Process
1:30-5p | Room 105 | Chris Hannum, PE
The core of most water quality issues can be traced back to the budgetary process. The focus of this class is to review some basic methods applied during the creation of an Authority/Municipal budget. The information is intended to give operators an understanding of their roles and responsibilities with regard to the allocation and use of funds. Earn 3 W & WW CH.
Let’s Clarify Clarifiers in Wastewater Treatment
1:30-5p | Room 108 | Ed Pietroski, PE
This course will help operators understand the various types of Clarifiers and how they operate as an integral part of the wastewater treatment system. Hydraulic Design Principles and Solids Loading Principles will be explained but more importantly how the Clarifier must be operated to stay within those principles will also be shown. The course will be specifically geared to making the operator understand the day to day adjustments of running a Clarifier. Theory be “damned!” Earn up to 3 WW CH.
Wednesday, March 27, 2019
An Operator's Guide to Wastewater Treatment Plant Design
1:30-5p | Room 205 | Chris Hannum, PE
Overall this course is meant to show the operator how the treatment plant design goes from concept to construction that will aide them in collaborating in the process. It is focused on design of facilities less than 1.0 MGD. Covers: Typical and Statistical Design Values, Discharge Criteria, Headworks (Screening and Grit Removal), Pumping Systems, Primary Sedimentation, Biological Treatment Selection (Extended Aeration, BNR, Sequencing Batch Reactors, etc.), Clarification, Disinfection and Post Aeration. Earn up to 3 WW CH.

Nutrient Removal in the Biological Treatment Process
8-11:30a | Room 106 | Ed Pietroski, PE
This course will help operators understand nutrient removal from wastewater in a biological treatment process with explanations of biochemical processes to remove Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Total Nitrogen & Phosphorus. Earn 3 WW CH.
Not All It's Cracked Up To Be - Our Failing Pipe Infrastructure
1:30-5p | Room 204 | Bryon Killian, PE & Robb Kalbach (USG)
A combination of old pipes and earlier than expected failure of newer pipes has led to a “perfect storm” in our pipe infrastructures. Estimates of pipeline replacement nationwide exceed $1 trillion in the next decade. This course covers the history of pipes, expected lifespans and considerations for line replacement. Earn 3 W & WW CH
Wanna Get Tanked? Inspection, Coating & Care
1:30-5p | Room 207 | Christine Gunsaullus, EIT
This course covers the materials & styles of storage tanks. It will also address which decisions, during the design process, will affect long term care include a general discussion on coatings. The course will also cover the type & frequency of inspections, including owner performed inspections. Finally, several case studies will be reviewed. Earn 3 W & WW CH.
